Erika Lafrennie is the founder of Cypher Strategies and the creator of Governance Warfare, a framework for understanding how institutional and governance systems shape strategic competition, constrain action, and create leverage.

Her work focuses on problems in which conventional geopolitical or risk analysis does not fully explain why a strategic objective is succeeding, failing, or becoming vulnerable. She examines who actually holds authority, which relationships and dependencies matter, where decisions can be blocked, and where leverage still exists.

She publishes Xinanigans, including China This Week, a weekly analytic series on Chinese policy, governance, and strategic behavior.

Her career spans more than fifteen years across intelligence analysis, support to special operations and interagency efforts, irregular warfare research, and strategic advisory, including intelligence roles supporting the Department of Defense and US Special Operations Command, and several years of political-risk work focused on Africa. She previously co-founded and led a geopolitical risk advisory practice, where she developed and taught a curriculum in geopolitical risk analysis and established a pro bono practice advising the families of Americans held hostage or wrongfully detained abroad.

She was a non-resident fellow at Joint Special Operations University, where her research examined irregular warfare and the evolving role of US Special Operations Forces in strategic competition, using Africa as a principal case.

She holds an M.A. in Strategic Intelligence, with concentrations in Middle Eastern Studies and Terrorism, from American Military University, with additional study at the University of St Andrews and the Arabic Language Institute of Fes. She has lived in, worked in, and traveled independently across more than 40 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.
